What you actually do
Pickup is at your hotel, hostel or Airbnb in the Centro Histórico, in an air-conditioned minibus that carries up to 18 passengers.
Monte Albán gets the longest block: 2 hours with a locally born guide walking you through the Zapotec capital. One reviewer counted only 30 minutes of free time after the guided part.
From there the route runs in this order, each stop about 40 minutes:
- San Antonio Arrazola – an alebrije workshop, with a demonstration of how the brightly coloured creatures are made.
- Free time for lunch – an optional buffet of Oaxacan dishes, MXN 230, paid there.
- Mezcal palenque – agave piñas baked in an earthen oven, natural fermentation, unhurried distillation by the maestro, then a tasting.
- San Bartolo Coyotepec – the black-clay workshops, with an explanation of how local clay, skilled hands and fire produce the dark sheen.

Who it’s for / who should skip it
Book it if you have one day for the countryside south of the city and want archaeology, craft and mezcal without organising three separate trips. Guide in English and Spanish; free cancellation up to 24 hours before; reserve now, pay later.
Skip it if mobility is limited: the operator rules out pregnant women and people with mobility impairments, citing uneven ground and stairs at Monte Albán. If mezcal is the main reason for your trip, one 40-minute palenque stop is a taster. The Mezcal Journey spends 6 hours on producers alone.

Choose this one if you want the crafts and a first taste of mezcal at the lowest per-person price. Choose the half-day if Monte Albán itself is the point, and the private day if you are two and want Hierve el Agua in the same loop.
Practical details
Pickup is at your accommodation inside the central pickup zone, address given at checkout; drop-off is at C. de Manuel García Vigil 9. Return is estimated at 5:30 PM. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.
Bring closed-toe shoes, a sun hat, sunscreen, a long-sleeved shirt, water and pesos for the fees. High heels, food and alcohol in the vehicle are not allowed.
